  • Salt: 1 tsp
  • Cocoa powder: 1 tsp
  • Vegetable oil: 1 1/2 cups
  • Buttermilk, room temp: 1 cup
  • Eggs, room temp: 2 large
  • Red food coloring: 2 tbsp
  • Purple food coloring: 1 tsp (or more for desired hue)
  • White distilled vinegar: 1 tsp

Frosting

  • Cream cheese, softened: 1 pound
  • Unsalted butter, room temp: 2 sticks
  • Vanilla extract: 1 tsp
  • Confectioners’ sugar, sifted: 4 cups

Instructions

Prepare the Cake Layers

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red and purple food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until the batter is smooth.
  • Divide batter evenly between prepared pans.

2. Bake the Cake

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

3. Make the Cream Cheese Frosting

  • In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gradually add sifted confectioners’ sugar, beating well after each addition, until fluffy.

4. Assemble the Cake

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of frosting on top.
  • Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  • Smooth the frosting with an offset spatula or create decorative swirls.

5. Decorate and Serve

  • Garnish with edible flowers, sprinkles, or extra purple accents if desired.
  • Slice and serve to enjoy the moist, flavorful delight.
