Ingredients
For the Red Velvet Bread:

For the Custard:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- Butter or oil for cooking
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (for consistency)
Instructions
- Prepare the Red Velvet Bread
- In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, cocoa powder, yeast, sugar, and salt.
- Add warm water, vegetable oil, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and eggs. Beat until smooth.
- Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled.
- Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan. Let rise for 30-45 minutes.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes. Cool completely before slicing.
- Make the Custard
- In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cocoa powder, and cinnamon. Set aside.
- Prepare the Cream Cheese Frosting
- Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until creamy. Add milk to achieve desired consistency.
- Slice and Stuff the Bread
- Slice the red velvet bread into thick slices (about 1-inch).
- Create a pocket in each slice and fill with 1-2 tablespoons of cream cheese frosting.
- Cook the French Toast
- Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter or oil.
- Dip each stuffed slice into the custard, soaking for a few seconds on each side.
- Cook slices for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Serve and Garnish
- Top with additional cream cheese frosting, powdered sugar, fresh berries, syrup, or whipped cream. Serve immediately.
