  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs

For the Custard:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Butter or oil for cooking

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk (for consistency)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Red Velvet Bread
    • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, cocoa powder, yeast, sugar, and salt.
    • Add warm water, vegetable oil, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and eggs. Beat until smooth.
    • Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
    • Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled.
    • Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan. Let rise for 30-45 minutes.
    • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes. Cool completely before slicing.
  • Make the Custard
    • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cocoa powder, and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • Prepare the Cream Cheese Frosting
    • Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
    • Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until creamy. Add milk to achieve desired consistency.
  • Slice and Stuff the Bread
    • Slice the red velvet bread into thick slices (about 1-inch).
    • Create a pocket in each slice and fill with 1-2 tablespoons of cream cheese frosting.
  • Cook the French Toast
    • Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter or oil.
    • Dip each stuffed slice into the custard, soaking for a few seconds on each side.
    • Cook slices for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  • Serve and Garnish
    • Top with additional cream cheese frosting, powdered sugar, fresh berries, syrup, or whipped cream. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use store-bought red velvet bread to save time.
  • Adjust sweetness by reducing sugar in the custard or frosting.
  • For extra richness, drizzle with melted chocolate.
