Description

Classic comfort food gets an upgrade with Traditional Savoury Mince with Vegetables. This hearty dish combines lean minced beef, nutritious vegetables, and a rich, flavorful sauce to create the perfect meal for any occasion. Whether paired with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread, it’s a wholesome and satisfying option for family dinners or meal prep.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 500 g (1.1 lbs) lean minced beef (5% fat)
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs or thyme
  • 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 450 ml (1.9 cups) beef stock
  • 3 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 1 teaspoon Marmite or Worcestershire sauce
  • 200 g (7 oz) frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Aromatics
    • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or shallow casserole over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
  2. Brown the Minced Beef
    • Increase the heat slightly and stir in the dried Italian herbs. Add the minced beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and evenly cooked.
  3. Incorporate the Flour
    • Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir well, cooking for 1 minute to help thicken the sauce.
  4. Build the Sauce
    • Add the tomato puree, beef stock, and Marmite (or Worcestershire sauce). Stir to combine, then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add Vegetables
    • Stir in the frozen mixed vegetables and season with salt and black pepper. Cook for an additional 6-8 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and heated through.
  6. Serve and Enjoy
    • Remove from heat and serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.

Notes

  • Opt for lean minced beef to reduce fat while keeping the dish flavorful.
  • Feel free to swap frozen mixed vegetables with fresh options like diced carrots, peas, or corn.
  • Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a bit of red wine for deeper flavors.
  • To make this gluten-free, substitute plain flour with cornstarch or a gluten-free alternative.
