Ingredients
For the Sandwich
- 6 slices rye bread
- 6 tbsp butter, softened
- 1 lb ground beef
- ¾ tsp ground black pepper

- ¼ tsp onion powder
- 6 slices cheddar cheese
- 6 slices provolone cheese
For the Sauce
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp real bacon bits
- 1 tsp sweet relish
- 1 tsp white sugar
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread
- Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Set aside.
- Season and Shape the Patties
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, black pepper, salt, and onion powder.
- Divide into three equal portions and shape into patties that match the size of the bread slices.
- Cook the Patties
- Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each patty for 2–3 minutes per side until browned, then reduce heat to low and cook for an additional 5 minutes until fully cooked (160°F internal temperature).
- Make the Sauce

- Assemble the Patty Melts
- Place one slice of buttered bread (butter-side down) in the skillet.

- Top with another slice of bread (butter-side up).
