Experience the ultimate comfort food with this Best Patty Melt Recipe! Juicy beef patties, gooey layers of cheddar and provolone cheese, and buttery toasted rye bread come together for a sandwich that’s equal parts indulgent and nostalgic. Perfect for lunch, dinner, or a cozy treat any time.

Ingredients

For the Sandwich

  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ¾ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

For the Sauce

  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp real bacon bits
  • 1 tsp sweet relish
  • 1 tsp white sugar

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bread
    • Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Set aside.
  • Season and Shape the Patties
    • In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, black pepper, salt, and onion powder.
    • Divide into three equal portions and shape into patties that match the size of the bread slices.
  • Cook the Patties
    • Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each patty for 2–3 minutes per side until browned, then reduce heat to low and cook for an additional 5 minutes until fully cooked (160°F internal temperature).
  • Make the Sauce
    • In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, bacon bits, relish, and sugar until smooth.
  • Assemble the Patty Melts
    • Place one slice of buttered bread (butter-side down) in the skillet.
    • Layer with 2 slices of cheddar cheese, a cooked beef patty, 2 slices of provolone cheese, and a dollop of the prepared sauce.
    • Top with another slice of bread (butter-side up).
  • Toast the Sandwiches
    • Cook the assembled patty melts over medium-low heat for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve and Enjoy
    • Slice each sandwich in half and serve immediately with fries, chips, or a crisp salad.
